I'm using Okume (Gaboon) ply myself and it's very good stuff, it looks nice having an appearance similar to Mahogany, and it doesnt check the way that Fir does.
Epoxy/glass adherance is excellent, I've had no problems with it at all. I certainly don't find it to be brittle, it bends quite happily with no splitting or breaking. The hard surface is very ding resistant even before you sheath it.
It meets the BS1088 standard for marine ply, so from both a structural and durability point of view it's as good as any. Good enough for LLoyds insurers anyway!
In the UK D-F ply is almost unheard of, I couldn't find it anywhere after a long search, so I assume all builders in this country are using similar ply to mine.
: From studying several builder's sites - who are using Okyme or Maranti marine plywood for their S&G boat projects - it appears that these marine plywoods have a very dense and brittle outer layer. I wonder how they stack up against good old AA Marine Fir Plywood - for epoxy/glass adherance and durability? Wonder if they are as good as we've been led to belive?
