I have been using Bs1088 Meranti on my current project. In my opinion, it is much easier to work with compared to A/B marine fir that I have used in the past. I find Meranti easier to bend and easier to fair. I have not found the outer laminations to be brittle. It is nice stuff. I also understand that it will not check (when not covered in fiberglass), but I have not yet completed my boat.
Additionally, Meranti costs the same as marine fir in my area of the country.
