Yes, a commonly used variety is called Okoume (African mahogany, I believe). I've never used it, but have seen the finished product and it is beautiful. The ten coats of varnish you plan to use will give it depth...it will look like the finish on a fine piano. Good luck!

: Was not aware that I could get 1/4" marine grade mahogany plywood. That would make the hull much easier and quicker to build.
