Outboard Controls

I am building a 16' center console. When I run the controls (steering, throttle and fuel) from the center console to the outboard, can they go down the center of the boat, coming out right in front of the boat, or do they need to come down the side of the boat, and turn 90 degrees into the motor. Going down the center under the floor would be easiest for a center console. If I have to go down the side, does it have to be all the way to the wall, or can I run it under the floor 12-18" off center. I want to use a PVC pipe to act as a conduit for the controls. How large of diameter pipe should I plan on. Space is at a premium under the floor by the side wall, I have plenty in the center. Thanks!

Tom
