Here some info- buy the best quality bronze oarlock and sockets. Forget pastic. first time out you will appreciate the smoothness of the bronze. As for oars, wood = shaw & Tenney, high quality synthics that behave like wood is cataracts, at about $400 a pair. For half that you can get a set of heavy rafting carlises, nice oars that work for the money, you can also get them in take-aparts and can get 1 ft exstensions.Get the proper size oars for the boat and get counterbalancers for them, takes a lot of weight off of you.Do some research as to the size of oar for your boat. No formula works, I use to know about 5 formulas as to determining length, but it comes down to what size works the best for a certain boat.Quality oars and locks and sockets = a smooth and pleasurable boat to row, that actually makes headway quite well. Junk = aggrevation and a lot of work to get half as far.Have fun, I think quality rowboats are going to make a comeback.

: I had read the oarlocks report, but had not seen the sources page. I'm getting a little closer to making a decision between a Davis folding lock and a North River.
: The nylon set still seems to have some appeal to me, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has actual experience with them.

: And THANKS Ron for your input. It's a good thing I still have a few weeks worth of work left to complete my boat.

: : : : I am so confused about buying oar-locks. There are so many different kinds and the prices I'm seeing seem to vary widely. I often wonder if the price is each or by the pair. I'm pretty sure I want side mount. What I don't know is if all side mount sockets have the L shape I'm looking for. I've even seen some nylon sets (that seem to come in a complete package).

: : : : Any opinion would be greatly appreciated. Please be specific. Price and weight seem like thay are important to me. I wouldn't mind if they were quiet as well as this will be for a duck hunting boat. I seem to find bronze appealing - although I don't know why.
