Most alkyd and PU reinforched (1k) varnishes are compatible with the oil based stains avaialble. To be sure you should do a test first. Varnish manufacturers like Hempel , International e.g. often have mahogany stains in their program. These can be used as pre-coloring systems or be mixed with the varnish.
