DO NOT try to seal the seams completely!! You run the chance of doing major damage to your hull! There was an article in Classic Boating magazine a few years ago which described what can happen. The author described a boat which had been totally sealed - when the planks swelled, the forces were too much and the chines were split.

I'm not clear on what materials to use with the "classic" cotton (oakum, actually) method. The author of the article saturated his planks with CPES to reduce the swelling. I'd suggest getting a copy of that article.
