I built an XP-8 a couple of winters ago. I was 16 at the time and did it all by myself. It was a fun project, and I am sure you and your son would not have a great time. I used a 9.8HP Merc on mine. It went about 25MPH. I decided I wanted more speed, so next summer I will be using a 20HP engine I am currently building. I dont think you AND your son will fit in the boat at the same time. On the other hand, I was driving my girlfiend around in it last summer, and I weigh 180lbs, and she weighs around 100lbs... So I guess it might be ok, but it would be a little cramped...
