: I am interested in building a dory that can be outfitted with a 20 hp outboard - long shaft. I like the look of the Sweet Caroline but the design calls for minor modifications if using a long shaft. What kind of modifications are we talking about? Does anyone have any experience with this matter? Is it possible to hang the outbaord off the transom in order to make the craft a bit more roomier or will this drastically affect the handling characteristics? I would also like to know if any other designs are available for similar dory designs in the 18 to 20 foot range.

: Thanks much.

Sean, sorry I haven't contacted you sooner. I am presently building sweet caroline and in the plans there are provisions for the modification of the motor well height to accomodate a longer shaft outboard. Unfortunately the modifications are not specified, in other words you will have to determine your own dimensions depending on the motor that you get. I am going with a standard shaft so I am working with the existing plans. With regards your second question, I'm sure you could adapt some kind of arrangement or adaptation to the transom, although I think this is a question best answered by Glen-L. Let me know if I can be of further help. Good luck.
