: : I am interested in building a dory that can be outfitted with a 20 hp outboard - long shaft. I like the look of the Sweet Caroline but the design calls for minor modifications if using a long shaft. What kind of modifications are we talking about? Does anyone have any experience with this matter? Is it possible to hang the outbaord off the transom in order to make the craft a bit more roomier or will this drastically affect the handling characteristics? I would also like to know if any other designs are available for similar dory designs in the 18 to 20 foot range.

: : Thanks much.

: Sean, sorry I haven't contacted you sooner. I am presently building sweet caroline and in the plans there are provisions for the modification of the motor well height to accomodate a longer shaft outboard. Unfortunately the modifications are not specified, in other words you will have to determine your own dimensions depending on the motor that you get. I am going with a standard shaft so I am working with the existing plans. With regards your second question, I'm sure you could adapt some kind of arrangement or adaptation to the transom, although I think this is a question best answered by Glen-L. Let me know if I can be of further help. Good luck.

Thanks much. My plans are now on the way so hopefully I will soon see exactly what I am up against. As I already have a long shaft motor and have no desire to buy another, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will be making the modifications. Would you be interested in swapping e-mail addresses because I am very curious to talk to others about this boat - construction, planned usage etc? My address is seand@civil.just.gov.nf.ca if you are interested in contacting me. What may be a point of intersest is that I am writing from St. John's in the province of Newfoundland, Canada - the most easterly point on the North American continent. I will be using my boat to ply the rugged sea coast of this beautiful land. Sailing waters that were once home to a thriving small boat fishery that was carried out using craft much like the Sweet Caroline with the exception that they had almost pointed transoms rather than the squared off one in this design.
